First of OECD member restricted press freedom

To restrict press freedom, it's one of the reasons for Koreans' ignorance.

IPI Puts Korea on Watch List
The joint delegation of the International Press Institute and World Association of Newspapers, currently in Korea to investigate the tax probe into the media and the arrest of newspaper owners, announced Thursday that they were placing the country on the IPI Watch List. At a news conference in the Orchid Room of the Westin Chosun Hotel, the delegation said that the decision was unanimous.
They said that the tax investigation and arrest of newspaper owners was only the beginning of a concerted attack on the media, and the government wanted to limit newspaper ownership and derive owners of managerial rights by legislating a media reform bill. Director Johan P. Fritz said that countries on the Watch List are ones that are ostensibly open, but in fact restrict press freedom.
Korea is the first member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development to be placed on the list, which includes Russia, Sri Lanka and Venezuela.
